Editor’s note: We are not giving a rating to the RTM version of
Microsoft Office 2010, because it does not yet include all of the features that will be available at launch.

The Microsoft Office 2010 RTM is now available, and though it’s not quite ready for prime time (official launch in June) most features are available across the entire suite, with some tweaks from earlier releases. In this CNET First Take, we’ll take a look at some of the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let you use your PC, smartphone, and the Web to make your projects come together more efficiently. From what we’ve seen, a few issues will need to be ironed out before the launch, but many of the new features should prove to be useful and worthy of the upgrade.

The Ribbon (introduced in Office 2007) continues to keep frequently used features handy at the top of your work space. But in Office 2010, you’ll have access to the Ribbon across all of the applications in the suite, with contextual tabs and features to help you get the most out of each program. In Outlook 2010, for example, a Quick Steps section of the Ribbon has options to let you quickly create team meetings, move threads to specific folders, or custom forward messages (with premade subjects) to specific recipients. In Excel, you can flip through the tabs to access formulas, insert diagrams and charts, and quickly import data from connected sources. Having an easy way to access the most-used functions of each of the Office applications is very handy, and it’s clear Microsoft did its research to make the most of each application’s Ribbon. In the latest version of Microsoft Office 2010, you can now customize the Ribbon with any feature you want, so that it has only the commands you need for your specific work flow.

It’s also clear that Microsoft paid attention to usage patterns across all of the applications to come up with easier ways to get things done. The new Paste Preview lets you easily switch between paste options so you know your work will be formatted correctly in your document before you commit to sending it out. In Outlook, it’s now possible to turn long e-mail threads into conversations, so you can quickly find information from specific participants without having to scroll through long, confusing threads. Microsoft says it received mixed reactions to the conversation view and decided to leave it off by default in the latest version, but it’s easily accessible from the Ribbon.

Another new feature lets you ignore entire threads in Outlook, including future e-mails on a subject, so you can eliminate noise and distractions in your workday. You can have your office voice mails delivered to your in-box, from which you can listen to voice mails and view a rough preview of what was said if you don’t have time to listen. Searching through your in-box has also been made easier, with an added suggestions drop-down showing commonly used search tools that appear the second you click in the search box. Type a few letters and Outlook makes search suggestions that include actions (like forward and reply, for example), eliminating added steps once you locate the e-mail. Office 2010 includes many new time-saving features like these across the entire suite, but it’s more than just tweaks to existing work flow.

Some of the flashier feature additions will be good news to anyone who works with media in their documents and presentations. Many of the new features push your presentations away from the usual bullet points and toward more engaging visual presentations. PowerPoint now has options for editing video right within the program. You’ll be able to trim video so your audience sees only the video content you want them to see. You also can add video effects, fades, and even create video triggers to launch animations during your presentation. These video bookmarks can be used to cue captions at specific points during a video, for example. When it’s a static presentation you’re working on–such as a publication, newsletter, or pamphlet–Office 2010 will let you edit and add effects to images so you won’t need a third-party image editor. Microsoft has also added easy access to Ligatures and Stylistic Alternates to fonts in Publisher so you can add your own personal touches to your publications. Like most of the new features in Office 2010, you can find most of these added options in the Ribbon for that particular application.

As more of our data moves into the cloud, sharing and collaboration have become a major part of project execution, and Office 2010 will offer several options to help people work together. Though the Web-based components of the Office suite are still invite-only in the RTM version, the features we’ve seen–when they work–will make sharing information easier whether it’s from your home computer, your phone, or when you’re traveling for business. Stripped-down Web browser versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote will become available to all at launch, and, according to Microsoft, they will preserve the look and feel of a document regardless of the device you’re working on–even if it’s your smartphone. Our experience with the Web versions has been somewhat less than ideal, with frequent glitches and problems saving documents. Hopefully this will be an area worked out by the launch.

New coauthoring in Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote and advanced e-mail management and calendaring capabilities in Outlook will make collaboration much easier, reducing the time it takes to finish large projects with several contributors. Businesses will be required to use Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services to gain access, but private users will be able to access their work using Windows Live or their Facebook log-ins. In the latest version, Word and PowerPoint now have a syncing mechanism to avoid sudden changes while you’re working on a project (a major concern in the beta). We wonder how people will react to this specific change, since now the only way to have live coauthoring (without the need to sync up changes) will be through OneNote. In any case, offering access to shared documents in key business applications from anywhere is something any international business or business traveler can appreciate.

One of our favorite improvements to Office 2010 is what Microsoft calls the Backstage view, accessed by clicking on the File tab. Backstage gives you a launching point to share documents, print out your work, set permissions, and other program-specific options to get your project ready for distribution. You’ll find all of the usual document management features, like Open and Save, here as well, but you’ll also get a nice layout of templates for new documents, several different ways to share your work (which Microsoft now calls Save and Send for clarity), and print settings and page layouts all in one place. People may initially be resistant to a new way of doing things (as is often the case), but once you get used to using the Backstage view for all of your file management, we think you’ll find it useful and efficient to have access to everything in one place.

Microsoft Office 2010 will be released in June and it appears Microsoft has made extensive usability improvements across the entire Office suite since the beta. Like with any major upgrade, it may take time to get used to the layout of tools and new ways of doing things, but in our tests, we found many of the new features make working on projects across the suite much easier. If the company can iron out the bugs in the Web versions of its software, Microsoft Office 2010 will be a worthy upgrade, but only for people who can justify the rather hefty price tag.

Silicon Valley police are investigating what appears to be a lost Apple iPhone prototype purchased by a gadget blog, a transaction that may have violated criminal laws, a law enforcement official told CNET on Friday.

Apple has spoken to local police about the incident and the investigation is believed to be headed by a computer crime task force led by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office, the source said. Apple’s Cupertino headquarters is in Santa Clara County, about 40 miles south of San Francisco.
Apple logo

Editors at Gizmodo.com, part of Gawker Media’s blog network, said in an article posted Monday that they paid $5,000 for what they believed to be a prototype of an impending iPhone 4G. The story said the phone was accidentally left at a bar in Redwood City, Calif., last month by an Apple software engineer and found by someone who contacted Gizmodo, which had previously indicated it was willing to pay significant sums for unreleased Apple products.

The purpose of an investigation is to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to file criminal charges. Spokesmen for Santa Clara County and San Mateo County — home to the Redwood City bar — declined to comment. Representatives for Apple and Gawker Media did not immediately respond to interview requests. Nick Denton, the chief executive of Gawker Media, wasn’t immediately available for comment.

CNET has not been able to confirm whether the investigation is targeting Gizmodo.com, its source who reportedly found the iPhone in a bar, or both. Apple acknowledged that the lost device is their property and asked for its return; Gizmodo has since said that it has returned the device.

The tale of a lost iPhone may sound trivial, but Apple goes to great lengths to protect the secrecy of its products, and the company has not been afraid to take aggressive legal measures in the past. It filed a lawsuit against a Mac enthusiast Web site, for instance, to unearth information about a leak. A state appeals court ruled in favor of the Web sites.

Apple argued in that case that information published about unreleased products causes it significant harm. “If these trade secrets are revealed, competitors can anticipate and counter Apple’s business strategy, and Apple loses control over the timing and publicity for its product launches,” Apple wrote in a brief.

Under a California law dating back to 1872, any person who finds lost property and knows who the owner is likely to be but “appropriates such property to his own use” is guilty of theft. If the value of the property exceeds $400, more serious charges of grand theft can be filed. In addition, a second state law says that any person who knowingly receives property that has been obtained illegally can be imprisoned for up to one year.

Any prosecution would be complicated because of the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of the press: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that confidential information leaked to a news organization could be legally broadcast, although that case did not deal with physical property and the radio station did not pay its source.

The computer crime task force is called REACT, which stands for Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, and was established in 1997 with a goal of working closely with Bay Area technology companies. In the past, for instance, Apple has contacted REACT to report an employee who sold over $100,000 worth of computers on eBay. REACT also has investigated denial-of-service attacks targeting local firms.

Wow! The new Iphone 4.0 OS seems so innovative! I have to give it up to Apple for finally listening to consumers needs and wants. The Iphone is getting better and better with each new OS system integration.
Check out a sneak peak of an Iphone with the new 4.0 Operating System.
